From the speed of light to moving mountains - and everything in between, Zoom explores how the universe and its objects move.
If you sit as still as you can in a quiet room, you might be able to convince yourself that nothing is moving. But air currents are still wafting around you. Blood rushes through your veins. The atoms in your chair jiggle furiously. In fact, the planet you are sitting on is whizzing through space 35 times faster than the speed of sound.
Natural motion dominates our lives and the intricate mechanics of the world around us. In Zoom, Bob Berman explores how motion shapes every aspect of the universe, literally from the ground up. With an informative and entertaining style and a knack for distilling the wondrous, Berman spans astronomy, geology, biology, meteorology, and the history of science, uncovering how clouds stay aloft, how the earth’s rotation curves a home run’s flight, and why a mosquito’s familiar whine resembles a telephone’s dial tone.

Thanks a lot!

All gradients shall be reduced. That’s all that humans are - gradient reducers. It’s why the universe created you. Your purpose is to help the universe reach thermodynamic equilibrium.
‘The purpose of life is to disperse energy’
“The truly dangerous ideas in science tend to be those that threaten the collective ego of humanity and knock us further off our pedestal of centrality. The Copernican Revolution abruptly dislodged humans from the center of the universe. The Darwinian Revolution yanked Homo sapiens from the pinnacle of life. Today another menacing revolution sits at the horizon of knowledge, patiently awaiting broad realization by the same egotistical species.”
The dangerous idea is this: the purpose of life is to disperse energy.

@apnea, what about pets, do they have the same purpose? that means there’s no afterlife, that’s really sad.

Berman is one of the great science popularisers: Zapped should be the first port of call for anyone still in doubt that physics can be as exciting as it is true.
Only don’t think you’ll stop at the audiobook: you’ll need your own hardcopy to cross-reference, annotate, and check the citations.
(’apnea’ is ‘choking’, isn’t it)?

Perspicacious as ever, stor.
The postulate that we were at the centre of the universe was not, as is mistakenly imagined, to vaunt or laud our position in existence. Before Copernicus, it was said that we were at “the fundament” of the universe. This means “the arsehole” of the universe. Needless to say, this was not intended to be complimentary.
Equally, Darwinian evolution resulted in the mind-bogglingly sophisticated human mind, capable of grasping & pursuing meaning, purpose & aetiology; of endeavouring to comprehend the universe itself, no less.
And yeah, entropy is a given, ole fruits.

Entropy indeed.
Thank you.
