The UK has declared a ‘climate emergency’ and pledged to become carbon neutral by 2050. So how do we get there? Drawing on actions, policies and technologies already emerging around the world, Chris Goodall sets out the ways to achieve this. His proposals include:
-Building a huge over-capacity of wind and solar energy, storing the excess as hydrogen.
-Using hydrogen to fuel our trains, shipping, boilers and heavy industry, while electrifying buses, trucks and cars.
-Farming - and eating - differently, encouraging plant-based alternatives to meat
-paying farmers to plant and maintain woodlands.
-Making fashion sustainable and aviation pay its way, funding synthetic fuels and genuine offsets.
-Using technical solutions to capture CO2 from the air, and biochar to lock carbon in the soil.
What We Need To Do Now is an urgent, practical and inspiring book that signals a green new deal for Britain.

Here’s a solution: use nuclear and stop buying things from China. Solves 90% of the issue.

@Maxcool also companies ought to stop outsourcing work to developing countries ‘because it’s cheaper’. Especially when it comes to manufacturing. Though that would mean actually paying employees a reasonable wage, so likely wont happen.
November 11th, 2021
You guys do that, I’ll have a steak and assume that the “climate crisis” is the same stupid that’s been sold for the last 70 years and which has resulted in absolutely nothing of significance.
In fact, I might even buy some cheap crap from China while I eat.

Wouldn’t expect any less from you Gordon. Wouldn’t be the first time you’d be obscenely ignorant on a topic, and I’d wager serious money it wont be the last either.

@GordonCoon
Hey Gordon, if you and all your fascist mates did the decent thing, the rest of us could all have a steak due to the easing of carbon footprints (sorry, BOOTprints) from all you bulletheads.
Go on. Be a dear.

Come on Gordon, RAUS!! SCHNELL!

We are a carbon based life form.

Lol at the wisdom of Jack. Who thinks I’m an American.
Pot, kettle, well, black, son.
November 11th, 2021
Lmao, Gordon thinks being wrong about someone’s nationality is as bad as presuming you know more about the climate than 8,000 qualified climatologists whose work is peer reviewed.

Thanks for all the sciencey content.
It’s comical that only in the last couple of decades that deniers/contrarians/cranks have suddenly become authorities on anthropogenic climate change when the basics have been known since the mid-nineteenth century(Foote, Tyndall) and no one said anything 120 years ago when Svante Arrhenius made the first crude–yet prescient–calculations of the indications of a doubling of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The clever Swede even nailed “arctic amplification” before it was coined.
But NOW these pioneers and the thousands of other qualified people that have examined the issue and noted an alarming increase in precisely the impacts given models(Hausfather 2020) are all wrong. Then there is that pesky instrumental record.
The time to move on lessening the impact of the human enterprise on the planet’s system was yesterday.
November 12th, 2021
ZERO Chance of that happening. For almost all people alive, atmospheric concentrations of CO2 have increased every year. Contemplate this quote:
“The upcoming 26th COP (Conference of the Parties) to be held November 2021 in Glasgow is on the docket for scientists and bureaucrats, as well as big moneyed interests, to knock heads in a formal setting to discuss the state of the planet. If all goes according to plan, like past COPs, powerful economic interests will sabotage what would otherwise be a rather dim forecast of a planet in various stages of collapse, some terminal.
We’ve seen this act (COP) repeat over and over, ever since COP1 in Berlin in 1995, as each successive COP-ending-ceremony finds the Parties congratulating each other, slaps on the back, for one more successful climate conference of 20,000-30,000 able-bodied professionals wiped-out from overconsumption of Beluga caviar and Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, but subsequently carbon emissions increase the following year, and every following year thereafter. What’s to congratulate?
More to the point, the annualized CO2 emissions rate is +60% since COP1, not decreasing, not going down, not once. After 25 years of the same identical pattern, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the take-home-work from all 25 COPs mysteriously turns into the antithesis of the mission statement of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

“the annualized CO2 emissions rate is +60% since COP1, not decreasing, not going down, not once. After 25 years of the same identical pattern”
There are dozens of positive self reinforcing feedbak loops under way & they are unstoppable. Even if humans stopped emissions entirely some of the feedbacks would slow down - big whoop. Inertia is a real bitch. Anyone who feels guilty - don’t. Humans are simply following their biological programming to use all their abilities to survive, reproduce, survive. The human is no different than the beaver. The damaged caused from reshaping the environment to increase their reproduction & survival odds is unintentional. No one set out to destroy the environment, so don’t listen to any progressives trying to guilt you over it.
November 12th, 2021
@apnea “ progrsssivestrying to guilt you…. “ oh FFS, is it really impossible for you to consider that trying to do something to stop or at least slow down global warming is not a conspiracy to make you feel guilty/ install global communism/Jewish bankers or whatever. You dislike the tone of a message, so you take that as a licence to just ignore it, just throw your hands up and say it’s inevitable, so let me get mine now while I can, screw everyone else.
November 12th, 2021
No, no, I think he’s right. Progressives are trying to guilt him. Rightly so too, given that even a parasite knows better than to kill its host. Imagine willingly being dumber than a parasite.
November 12th, 2021
@Jack_Milad: well put - it is terrifying to think we might be dumber than your standard parasite.
Back during the Blitz in WW2, Londoners were proud (at least after the war) of their grin and bear it, keep calm and carry on approach. That’s great and even necessary in the short term.
But in an open-ended problem like climate change what’s the difference between that and passive resignation? The kind of resignation that stops us from doing what we know we need to do to make changes. There is a related mechanism at play.
I guess climate change will the ultimate test of whether we have some free will, some agency or we are basically dumber than parasites.
November 12th, 2021
Re Blitz: just to be clear, I’m talking about how easy it for people to accept changed circumstances (for the better or worse) as the new normal.
The last thing we need to do with climate change is just accept it as the new normal.
November 13th, 2021
I am going to go listen to this in my truck. My diesel truck. Idling.
November 13th, 2021
We could all just stop breathing, we do breath out CO2… Also why do climate nuts hate plants and want them to suffocate???
November 13th, 2021
Up with CO2, the greening gas
November 13th, 2021
Y’know, if the problem gets bad enough we could just start culling the ignorant.
November 14th, 2021
Hey Jack…if you’re any kind of brave you’ll take that talk to China and India, the largest problem. The west can only do so much, and it will NEVER be enough to offset what THEY do. The fact that you’d rather try to intimidate people who aren’t the problem shows you to be a sham.

You know what makes me feel super positive about climate change, the dummies @the comment sections on books ab climate change. It seriously makes me feel better knowing Earth will kill us off sooner or later. We deserve to cease to exist, because of self-centered entitled pricks who bow to comfort over everything and can’t move a finger for anyone but their self-obsessed ass. God forbid you change anything in your pathetic creature comfort lives. If it doesnt get you, it sure will get your kids <3
