A leading microbiologist tackles the scientific and sociopolitical impact of viruses in eleven striking essays. Invisible in the food we eat, the people we kiss, and inside our own bodies, viruses flourish―with the power to shape not only our health, but our social, political, and economic systems. Drawing on his expertise in microbiology, Joseph Osmundson brings readers under the microscope to understand the structure and mechanics of viruses and to examine how viruses like HIV and COVID-19 have redefined daily life. Osmundson’s buoyant prose builds on the work of the activists and thinkers at the forefront of the HIV/AIDS crisis and critical scholars like José Esteban Munoz to navigate the intricacies of risk reduction, draw parallels between queer theory and hard science, and define what it really means to “go viral.” This dazzling multidisciplinary collection offers novel insights on illness, sex, and collective responsibility. Virology is a critical warning, a necessary reflection, and a call for a better future.

Not about virology. About gay culture.

I wanted to read about virology. Instead, from the first page, I got some autobiographical nonsense which had little to bear on the topic. Being gay is fine with me, but don’t sell me something about “virology science ” and make it all about being gay. Sheesh

Science unnecessarily through a queer eye

Dr. Osmundson is clearly a great scientist but interrupts brilliant scientific discourse to remind us over and over again, “Oh, did I tell you… I’m gay!” I got as far as page 21 and grew frustrated by the sophomoric use of queer metaphor like a teenagers preoccupation with sex. The title needs to be changed. I would have loved to read this book if it was about virology. He has much to share but he needs to find a different time and place to discuss his views on a queer life.

More SCIENCE AND VIROLOGY!!!
Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023
I picked up the book, and was interested in the perspective of the field of virology from this professor knowing that he was gay. That was a fine, a different point of view. What I wasn’t happy with was that the WHOLE BOOK REVOLVES AROUND HIS SEXUALITY. Very little to do with virology.
If you are looking for a book about the gay experience, this may be for you. But, if you are interested in science and virology as well, look elsewhere.
