A trailblazing, conversation-starting history of women’s health–from the earliest medical ideas about women’s illnesses to hormones and autoimmune diseases–brought together in a fascinating sweeping narrative.
Elinor Cleghorn became an unwell woman ten years ago. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease after a long period of being told her symptoms were anything from psychosomatic to a possible pregnancy. As Elinor learned to live with her unpredictable disease she turned to history for answers, and found an enraging legacy of suffering, mystification, and misdiagnosis.
In Unwell Women, Elinor Cleghorn traces the almost unbelievable history of how medicine has failed women by treating their bodies as alien and other, often to perilous effect. The result is an authoritative and groundbreaking exploration of the relationship between women and medical practice, from the wandering womb of Ancient Greece to the rise of witch trials across Europe, and from the dawn of hysteria as a catchall for difficult-to-diagnose disorders to the first forays into autoimmunity and the shifting understanding of hormones, menstruation, menopause, and conditions like endometriosis.
Packed with character studies and case histories of women who have suffered, challenged, and rewritten medical orthodoxy–and the men who controlled their fate–this is a revolutionary examination of the relationship between women, illness, and medicine. With these case histories, Elinor pays homage to the women who suffered so strides could be made, and shows how being unwell has become normalized in society and culture, where women have long been distrusted as reliable narrators of their own bodies and pain. But the time for real change is long overdue: answers reside in the body, in the testimonies of unwell women–and their lives depend on medicine learning to listen.

Another trailblazing story of victimhood in a democracy where the majority of the nation are “victims” by their own imaginary definition.

>being unwell has become normalized in society and culture
At least this author got one thing right: every hypochonriacal bint who’s had the sniffles thinks she needs to write a book about her brave struggle.

Medicine has failed women by failing to diagnose feminism as an illness.

Thanks for the upload notsure900.
Surprise, surprise, the same group of sexless women-hating-troglodytes is railing against a book that has absolutely nothing to do with them. Making a culture war issue out of a well known deficiency within the diagnostic field.

@spencerthayer Your gynecologist doesn’t take your complaints seriously because you don’t have a vagina, honey.

The life of all of us in the world is accompanied by a lot of suffering. And especially in less developed countries, women’s pain is much greater. Feminist movement may not have a clear solution to get out of the existing situation. But just saying the pains is a minimal relief for bearing the historical pains of women.
We should definitely not consider ourselves victims. But we have to help the victims to build a better world.

There was a program on BBC Radio 4 last week about black women being much less diagnosed for breast cancer in, let’s say, white countries, because many doctors do not see or recognize the discolouration of the skin, which is clearly visible on white women. It was quite sad that one woman went to the doctor several times and he said it was just a fatty lump, nothing serious, and, as to the pain she was feeling, perhaps she had banged her chest on a door or something. By the time the pain became too great, it was too late to do anything about it.
So are there some misdiagnoses out there.

Among the thousands who have actually read or listened to this book and reviewed it, it has been rated four to five stars. Professional publications resoundingly review it favorably. Book clubs report it as being an exceptionally compelling read. “Elinor Cleghorn’s Unwell Women: Misdiagnosis and Myth in a Man-Made World is an intriguing exploration of the history of women’s health, specifically how women are perceived as individuals and members of a larger healthcare system.” Chicago Review of Books “In order to recognize illness, you have to know what health looks like — what’s normal, and what’s not. Until recently, medical research generally calibrated “normal” on a trim white male. But heart disease in women, inconveniently, doesn’t always come with chest pain. A woman reporting dizziness, nausea and heart-pounding breathlessness in that same E.R. might be sent home with instructions to relax, her distress dismissed as emotional rather than cardiac.” NY Times. Thank you for the upload!
