“Surging sea levels are inundating the coasts.”
“Hurricanes and tornadoes are becoming fiercer and more frequent.”
“Climate change will be an economic disaster.”
You’ve heard all this presented as fact. But according to science, all of these statements are profoundly misleading.
When it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that “the science is settled.” In reality, the long game of telephone from research to reports to the popular media is corrupted by misunderstanding and misinformation. Core questions - about the way the climate is responding to our influence, and what the impacts will be - remain largely unanswered. The climate is changing, but the why and how aren’t as clear as you’ve probably been led to believe.
Now, one of America’s most distinguished scientists is clearing away the fog to explain what science really says (and doesn’t say) about our changing climate. In Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters, Steven Koonin draws upon his decades of experience - including as a top science advisor to the Obama administration - to provide up-to-date insights and expert perspective free from political agendas.
Fascinating, clear-headed, and full of surprises, this book gives listeners the tools to both understand the climate issue and be savvier consumers of science media in general. Koonin takes listeners behind the headlines to the more nuanced science itself, showing us where it comes from and guiding us through the implications of the evidence. He dispels popular myths and unveils little-known truths: despite a dramatic rise in greenhouse gas emissions, global temperatures actually decreased from 1940 to 1970. What’s more, the models we use to predict the future aren’t able to accurately describe the climate of the past, suggesting they are deeply flawed.
Koonin also tackles society’s response to a changing climate, using data-driven analysis to explain why many proposed “solutions” would be ineffective, and discussing how alternatives like adaptation and, if necessary, geoengineering will ensure humanity continues to prosper. Unsettled is a reality check buoyed by hope, offering the truth about climate science that you aren’t getting elsewhere - what we know, what we don’t, and what it all means for our future.

“Unsettled: Let’s pretend 99% of climate scientists are stupid and/or part of a conspiracy”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_E._Koonin
In 2004, Koonin joined BP as their chief scientist,
The Trump administration proposed to create a presidential committee in 2019 that would conduct an “adversarial” review of the scientific consensus on climate change. Koonin was actively involved in recruiting others to be part of this review.
In an article in Slate, Raymond Pierrehumbert, the Halley Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford, criticized Konin’s 2014 commentary in the Wall Street Journal, “Climate Science Is Not Settled,” as “a litany of discredited arguments”:
The nuggets of truth in Koonin’s essay are buried beneath a rubble of false or misleading claims from the standard climate skeptics’ canon.

Every western government, every academic institution, and all the major militaries around the globe are wrong, but his guy has the real goods. Sure …

There’s still climate deniers? Probably a niche retro market for those who couldn’t buy into ‘The Big Lie’ & ‘Great Reset’ conspiracies. Kinda like hippies who couldn’t get past the 60’s.
Way past the science & well into the consequences, which grow by the day. Everyone 50 or younger is going to see great horrors. Tragically, climate change is but 1 of 3 major predicaments converging (energy economy & environment - 3E’s). WASF

The lack of critical-thinking in today’s day and age is frightening. It’s MUCH better to just go along with what the “experts” say…even if they have an agenda.

Lol. I see those with no science degrees are still pretending that science is a democracy and if enough clowns say it’s true then it’s true.
A refusal to see the evidence before their eyes (like, you know, this “climate crisis” has been predicted our doom for 70 years now and such a doom has failed to materialize) doesn’t matter, they’ve got “experts” and “experts” while rarely right, make them feel so warm and fuzzy in the embrace of consensus.
That this is how every form of tyranny in history has arisen, doesn’t matter because it’s their tyranny and therefore, it must be the right kind of tyranny.
No-one denies that the climate is changing, this is a leftist fantasy which allows them to tarnish others without having to deal with their arguments.
What people disagree on (and for which there is no such 97% - it was never claimed to be 99% by anyone - consensus) is the significance of such change for the planet and the human race. And here, the science is far, far fuzzier.
But don’t let that stop you chaps, you keep on worshipping at the altar of St. Greta. It’s all you know how to do, because not one of you is a climate scientist or even, a scientist of any kind.

“Slate.” The left’s mouthpiece fostering supreme human compliance. Not really a credible citation!

A book universally criticized by those who actually study climate science: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-new-book-manages-to-get-climate-science-badly-wrong/
From the review: “The science is stronger than ever around findings that speak to the likelihood and consequences of climate impacts, and has been growing stronger for decades. In the early days of research, the uncertainty was wide; but with each subsequent step that uncertainty has narrowed or become better understood. This is how science works, and in the case of climate, the early indications detected and attributed in the 1980s and 1990s, have come true, over and over again and sooner than anticipated… [Decision makers] are using the best and most honest science to inform prospective investments in abatement (reducing greenhouse gas emissions to diminish the estimated likelihoods of dangerous climate change impacts) and adaptation (reducing vulnerabilities to diminish their current and projected consequences)”

Wow!! just wow, the level of group think is scary.
Do the science and read for your self, there is no consensus, none

Utter drivel.

No single group of “scientists” has been wrong, more frequently and consistently, than climate scientists. They make the CDC’s predictive models look good.
May 20th, 2021
Lol. Quoting “Scientific” American. It might once have been impressive but this year the same publication published a paper declaring weight loss to be racist.
At that point? They abandoned any claim to science. They are just another mouthpiece of a political movement.
You can’t trust a source that lies. It’s really that simple.
And the collaboration between academia, big tech, and publishing/media makes it impossible to trust a word that any of them say, anymore.
It’s not that they haven’t always lied, but they weren’t all cooperating on their lies until technology enabled this.
And once again for the cheap seats. Consensus is not science. Unless you’re a deranged humanities graduate, that is. Science is coming up with a hypothesis and testing it. If you can show that the hypothesis is absolutely robust - it’s considered to be fact. If you can’t? Then you’re making things up and when a lot of people make up the same thing? That’s consensus.
There are, undoubtedly, dozens of important scientific challenges that face us today - but climate change? It’s not that important. Not yet, at least.
May 20th, 2021
@GordonCoon: Right. Scientific American had one article about dieting you disagreed with. Therefore, they are lying about climate change.
Makes perfect sense.
But if ad hominem floats your boat:
The 1% of climate scientists who deny climate change are all in the pay of oil companies or “think tanks” funded by them, as the author is this book is. And he isn’t even a climate scientist.
May 20th, 2021
Ah bless, it’s Gweilo again who thinks it’s OK for science journals to adopt political positions and fictionalize science and thus, they should be trustworthy.
Because logic is never the strong suit of the deranged left, is it?
Again, no-one denies climate change - this is your imagination needing to create “bad guys” - not reality. There really is no discussing science with people who live in a fantasy world dictated to them by the billionaire class. Thanks for playing though.
May 21st, 2021
@coon: you’re following the current GOP style of just denying what is in plain sight. Anyway, the billionaires, like the Koch Bros,, Rupert Murdoch, are the ones who financed the climate denial, and specifically funded and promoted candidates who followed that line, and created astroturf groups, think tanks, etc, to convince people like yourself that climate change was some political agenda. All to protect their fossil fuel profits for a few more decades, regardless of the cost to the world.
May 23rd, 2021
Climate change denial doesn’t exist, except in your imagination.
Nobody has funded what hasn’t happened.
Happy to have cleared that up for you.
May 23rd, 2021
@Coon: denying denialism. cool.
Racism doesn’t exist. Climate change is a hoax. There was no insurrection. Trump didn’t lose the election. Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii.
Seeing a pattern….
Anyway:
“David Koch Was the Ultimate Climate Change Denier
How a playboy billionaire built a political army to defend his fossil fuel empire.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/23/opinion/sunday/david-koch-climate-change.html
Climate change is an observed fact. It’s not a policy or opinion. It doesn’t matter what your politics is, CO2 is a greenhouse gas and we are dumping 43 billion tons into the air every year. There are consequences and we are seeing them today.

It will take a few decades and then people will wake up and remember it as the “climate hysteria era” - just as today we laugh about the “new ice-age coming” headlines from the 1960-70s.
Too bad that millions will have to suffer from this big climate lie until then.
June 5th, 2021
@warmkuss The “new ice-age coming” headlines were just that, a handful of headlines in Sunday supplements from journalists trying to dramatise the new idea of climate change. Climate deniers love to equate these stories from 60 years ago with the million times more data we now have. Three generations of scientists have been born since then.
Even the actual scientists talking about ice ages then said were in a hiatus between ice ages. The next one might come in 10 thousand years. We have well and truly derailed that natural sequence now by burning ever more carbon every year since then. Every decade has been hotter than the last. Every one.
Nobody will “suffer” from less pollution and more efficient power in any case. Oil and coal are not infinite. Whether we burn it all and turn the planet into a sweatbox, or leave it in the ground, we will have to transition. It’s inevitable, our choice is only when.
