“Fake news” is a term you’ve probably heard a lot in the last few years, but it’s not a new phenomenon. From the ancient Egyptians to the French Revolution to Jack the Ripper and the Founding Fathers, fake news has been around as long as human civilization. But that doesn’t mean that we should just give up on the idea of finding the truth.
In True or False, former CIA analyst Cindy Otis takes listeners through the history and impact of misinformation over the centuries, sharing stories from the past and insights that listeners today can gain from them. Then, she shares lessons learned in more than a decade working for the CIA, including actionable tips on how to spot fake news, how to make sense of the information we receive each day, and, perhaps most importantly, how to understand and see past our own information biases so that we can think critically about important issues and put events happening around us into context.

A fascinating book:- if only for its privileged insight into the CIA’s highly idiosyncratic notion of ‘truth’ (Cindy has a strictly pragmatist notion, which I suppose is the US tradition), and its repeated vignettes of how the GBCI goes about its daily business.
Not a book I’d have bothered with if it hadn’t cropped up on here: but a remarkable trouvaille.
You have educated, and surprised, me Kapila.

For the average citizen:
If the “news” comes from the MSM, CNN et al. I’s Fake!
Simple.

Avoid The Washington Post, NYT, CNN and MSNBC and you won’t have to wade through the over 500 retractions and the thousands of out right lies in the last 8 months alone.
Remember, if the point of the article is “Orange man bad” there’s a good chance that it’s fake news.

So, lets turn to FOX News for truth :)

@pryderi: I’m impressed you taught me a new word.
I’m reading this right now: https://audiobookbay.fi/audio-books/propaganda-the-formation-of-mens-attitudes-jacques-ellul/
It is utterly fascinating and it will take at least a second read. I highly recommend it if you find this subject interesting (I haven’t read this one yet, but it looks like it’s worth a short, hopefully humorous book).
