The Believing Brain - Michael Shermer Audiobook
Shared by:methsc84
Synthesizing thirty years of research, psychologist and science historian Michael Shermer upends the traditional thinking about how humans form beliefs about the world. Simply put, beliefs come first and explanations for beliefs follow. The brain, Shermer argues, is a belief engine. Using sensory data that flow in through the senses, the brain naturally begins to look for and find patterns, and then infuses those patterns with meaning, forming beliefs. Once beliefs are formed the brain begins to look for and find confirmatory evidence in support of those beliefs, accelerating the process of reinforcing them, and round and round the process goes in a positive-feedback loop.

It always amazes me that someone, like Shermer, spends so much of their lives and energy trying to convince others that something doesn’t exist. Makes me wonder if he’s using his writings to run away from something.

That’s interesting. Sensory data is primary to embodied beings.
Also, one can equally say that intuitions come 1st.
Of course, it doesn’t follow from what is said that meaning is necessarily true or false (although the apparent effort is to relativise meaning).
Consciousness is a seriously difficult nut to crack; not to be resolved with buzzwords, or expedient attempts to poison the well.
Kant’s intuitions are the more correct in this regard.
(In addition, there’s something tragicomic about “30 years of research” resulting into: There’s no objective meaning so the author can’t logically vindicate or maintain anything whatsoever.)

@caesar963: Wow! So many words, so little meaning ππ

When you can’t manage a few words, you’ll never be able to understand an entire book, “m” ol’ chap.
(But then there can’t be objective meaning, can there?)

Hahaha Thanks!!!

Thanks. Should be interesting.

Caveat:
This is a presentation of the Skeptics Society, which some may conclude consists of rather selective skeptics, otherwise known as prejudiced people. This book sets out to debunk some beliefs but not others, based on its own all too subjective belief system that it fails to take into account.

M. Ceasar963, as opposed to non-embodied beings? Are you, perhaps, referring to AI, or imaginary friends?

I didn’t posit an opposition, Randy man. I ain’t in a position to address your imagination (we can’t even prove the definite existence of other minds). Although logic does reveal a necessary First Cause.
I’ll tell you what though, what do you reckon specifically of the expedient denial of objective meaning, what that exposes (poss in terms of ideology), and the pertinence of Kant’s epistemic intuitions? Fascinating area, all the same.

Great book but this version has regular audio pops (clicks) throughout the whole recording. Choose another upload.
