Expanding upon his viral TEDx Talk, psychology professor and social scientist John V. Petrocelli’s The Life-Changing Science of Detecting Bullshit reveals the critical thinking habits you can develop to recognize and combat pervasive false information and delusional thinking that has become a common feature of everyday life.
“This is the perfect moment for…the psychology of detecting fake news in the world around us - and false beliefs about ourselves, too.” (Adam Grant)
Bullshit is the foundation of contaminated thinking and bad decisions that leads to health consequences, financial losses, legal consequences, broken relationships, and wasted time and resources.
No matter how smart we believe ourselves to be, we’re all susceptible to bullshit - and we all engage in it. While we may brush it off as harmless marketing sales speak or as humorous, embellished claims, it’s actually much more dangerous and insidious. It’s how Bernie Madoff successfully swindled billions of dollars from even the most experienced financial experts with his Ponzi scheme. It’s how the protocols of Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward resulted in the deaths of 36 million people from starvation. Presented as truths by authority figures and credentialed experts, bullshit appears legitimate, and we accept their words as gospel. If we don’t question the information we receive from bullshit artists to prove their thoughts and theories, we allow these falsehoods to take root in our memories and beliefs. This faulty data affects our decision making capabilities, sometimes resulting in regrettable life choices.
But with a little dose of skepticism and a commitment to truth-seeking, you can build your critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills to evaluate information, separate fact from fiction, and see through bullshitter spin. In The Life-Changing Science of Detecting Bullshit, experimental social psychologist John V. Petrocelli provides invaluable strategies not only to recognize and protect yourself from everyday bullshit but to accept your own lack of knowledge about subjects and avoid engaging in bullshit just for societal conformity.
With real-world examples from people versed in bullshit who work in the used car, real estate, wine, and diamond industries, Petrocelli exposes the red-flag warning signs found in the anecdotal stories, emotional language, and buzzwords used by bullshitters that persuade our decisions. By using his critical thinking defensive tactics against those motivated by profit, we will also learn how to stop the toxic misinformation spread from the social media influencers, fake news, and op-eds that permeate our culture and call out bullshit whenever we see it.

Something smells fishy in here… Haha!!

Even the skeptics need to fine-tune their BS-Detectors from time to time. Think before you accept anything you hear or view from the media, politicians, or any so-called authority.
Looks to be an interesting, possibly eye-opening book.

@solarsmurph but at the same time don’t be so eager to mistrust the government that your automatic conclusion is to instantly assume that what they’re saying must be a lie. Too many ‘critical thinkers’ fall into that exact line of thinking with zero evidence. Which is why we’ve ended up with so many conspiracy theorists eager to dismiss reality as ‘fake news’.
There’s a healthy balance to be had.

I agree with Jack.

@Jack_Milad and Scleritis - I used to take the news and media at face value - lately the manipulations is plainly obvious (with some snippets of possible truth thrown in) but the BS filter must be active now 24/7.
Remember, I’m from the government, I’m here to help you (1984, X-files)

“The control of information is something the elite always does, particularly in a despotic form of government. Information, knowledge, is power. If you can control information, you can control people.” Tom Clancy “Vonnegut and Clancy on Technology”. Interview with Sarah Schafer, http://www.inc.com. December
‘I forgot that I was hired to do a job for you and that it was just a temp job at that. I forgot that I had two hundred and fifty million people who were paying me to make their lives a little better and I didn’t live up to my part of the bargain.’ Dave Kovic, Dave, 1993

I’ve never seen that one before. Holy Cow. Excellent. One gets the feeling that we are living in Stalinist Russia everyday.
Jack is right though too. There are many good people left in positions of power in America. We have to resist thinking everything coming out of Washington is a lie.

@solarsmurph I’m definitely not saying take everything at face value. I’m an advocate of the scientific method of verifying information. Context, relevance, credentials, expertise, political alignment, sources, who’s presenting the information and for what possible purpose or agenda are all important to have an understanding of. But outright dismissing something because one or two of those things is slightly off seems more an indication that it’s part of a bigger and more nuanced picture than outright untrue, more often than not.
I’m wary of the type of people who dismiss things as ‘fake news’. When the term was first uses it was to refer to things which were actually completely fabricated. Then the term got weaponized in order to dismiss stories which at least had elements of truth to them. Being too quick to dismiss or investigate further is too much like putting your head in the sand for my liking.

Jeremy Paxman used to approach every interview by asking himself the question: “Why is this lying bastard lying to me?”

The more of these types of books, the better– it takes discipline to protect oneself from often seductive, but more often, dangerous ideas.
