On July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II.
The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Their extraordinary meeting and the two years they spent in one another’s company serves as the basis for an investigation into the nature of human identity, belief, and delusion that is poignant, amusing, and at times disturbing. Displaying the sympathy and subtlety of a gifted novelist, Rokeach draws us into the lives of three troubled and profoundly different men who find themselves “confronted with the ultimate contradiction conceivable for human beings: more than one person claiming the same identity”.

always been kinda interested in this one! Apparently the doctor who did this experiment later regretted it and felt it had been unethical as it caused the patients some distress, but I think it is the kind of thing that probably had to be done (not necessarily at that time or in that way) due to human curiosity, if only to teach us not to do it. Without this, I have no doubt that someone else just would have done a similar experiment at some other time (in fact, similar things likely happened multiple times in previous centuries, as “ethics” in terms of completely delusional psych patients was not very important until comparitivly recently). At least this guy reflected on it later.

I’m waiting for the experiment where they confine 1 MAGA-Tard and 1 Uber-woke libtard in Thunder Dome
.
2 tards enter - 1 tard leaves - 2 tards enter - 1 tard leaves - 2 tards enter - 1 tard leaves..

For Christians, Christ is within us all.
For sure, the three patients suffered from over-identification. But that is something we all suffer from, in varying degree and in one form or another.
Thanks for the upload. Keep searching!

Hmmm…
This is a very basic collection of session transcriptions and correspondence between patients and psychologists. There is hardly any analysis (typical for social psychologists), and no hindsight reflection by Rokeach at all, something which I was hoping for most.
Schizophrenics are by nature stubbornly repetitive in their language, so expect a lot of “’tis! ’tisn’t! ’tis! ’tisn’t!” type dialogue throughout the book, something I was surprised to find even the psychologists themselves stooped to engage in.
Despite the fascinating dialogues and monologues of the patients, the lack of analysis makes for a rather shallow listen. I’d be more curious to read what Jungians and Hindu mystics would make of these patients’ stories.
