Publisher’s Summary
For over three decades, the great inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil has been one of the most respected and provocative advocates of the role of technology in our future. In his classic The Age of Spiritual Machines, he argued that computers would soon rival the full range of human intelligence at its best. Now he examines the next step in this inexorable evolutionary process: the union of human and machine, in which the knowledge and skills embedded in our brains will be combined with the vastly greater capacity, speed, and knowledge-sharing ability of our creations.
That merging is the essence of the Singularity, an era in which our intelligence will become increasingly nonbiological and trillions of times more powerful than it is today - the dawning of a new civilization that will enable us to transcend our biological limitations and amplify our creativity. In this new world, there will be no clear distinction between human and machine, real reality and virtual reality. While the social and philosophical ramifications of these changes will be profound, and the threats they pose considerable, The Singularity Is Near maintains a radically optimistic view of the future course of human development. As such, it offers a view of the coming age that is both a dramatic culmination of centuries of technological ingenuity and a genuinely inspiring vision of our ultimate destiny.

And yet, nearly 10 years on, we are no nearer to it.

The problem with the idea of a singularity is that it implies a point where the underlying math (or physics) breaks. It also usually means we need more math, something like, a universe where one can divide by zero…
No singularity made us look back at and question the universe. It happened over time and with increasing sophistication. We can now see the birth of the first stars, even before they get too far to be seen.
Why would transcending our biology implicate a singularity?

..and yet we don’t have a clue what consciousness is.

That is indeed the burning question, panda.

Jonn Searle had a pretty good definition of consciousness is: Consciousness consists of inner, qualitative, subjective states and processes of sentience or awareness. Consciousness, so defined, begins when we wake in the morning from a dreamless sleep - and continues until we fall asleep again, die, go into a coma or otherwise become “unconscious.”
Yeah, you could still go on and say “well yes, but we don’t know what consciousness actually IS, do we?”
The issue here is that if that’s going to be your line of reasoning, we haven’t really got much of a clue what matter is either. We can define smaller and smaller things that it’s made up of, and the ways it interacts with everything else, but we don’t really know what it IS, do we?
Don’t get me wrong - consciousness research has got a long way to go, I’m not saying it doesn’t. But the fact that we haven’t a clue what it actually is not all that relevant

Avdemid: if you’d read the book you’d know he puts his tentative prediction around 2045 but admits it could be latet or as soon as 2029, so it not happening yet doesn’t discredit the book.
Senretorno: the technological singularity does not imply physics or math breaking. We haven’t already had one, technological change has had periods where it sped up, but none where it exploded in the sense people mean when they talk about a technological singularity. It’s not supposed that it would be literally instantaneous, but just that AI driven technological change could happen at an exponential rate faster than unaugmented humans can comprehend it. Transcending biology is just an optimistic use case of superadvanced AI, nanobots, biotech, etc — there could be a technological singularity that doesn’t take us with it.
