In 1940 Steinbeck sailed for six weeks (March 11 – April 20) in a sardine boat with his great friend the marine biologist, Ed Ricketts, to collect marine invertebrates from the beaches of the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. The two men in Sea of Cortez, published in 1941, described the expedition. The day-to-day story of the trip is told here in the Log, which combines science, philosophy and high-spirited adventure.

It is regarded as one of Steinbeck’s most important works of non-fiction chiefly because of the involvement of Ricketts, who shaped Steinbeck’s thinking and provided the prototype for many of the pivotal characters in his fiction, and the insights it gives into the philosophies of the two men.

His prose as also poetry in the way it flows and the ideas expressed. Beautiful.
