Here is the remarkable story of how medieval Arab scholars made dazzling advances in science and philosophy, and of the itinerant Europeans who brought this knowledge back to the West. For centuries following the fall of Rome, Western Europe was a benighted backwater, a world of subsistence farming, minimal literacy, and violent conflict. Meanwhile, Arab culture was thriving, dazzling those Europeans fortunate enough to catch even a glimpse of the scientific advances coming from Baghdad, Antioch, or the cities of Persia, Central Asia, and Muslim Spain. There, philosophers, mathematicians, and astronomers were steadily advancing the frontiers of knowledge and revitalizing the works of Plato and Aristotle.
In the royal library of Baghdad, known as the House of Wisdom, an army of scholars worked at the behest of the Abbasid caliphs. At a time when the best book collections in Europe held several dozen volumes, the House of Wisdom boasted as many as 400,000. Even while their countrymen waged bloody Crusades against Muslims, a handful of intrepid Christian scholars, thirsty for knowledge, traveled to Arab lands and returned with priceless jewels of science, medicine, and philosophy that laid the foundation for the Renaissance.
In this brilliant, evocative book, Lyons shows just how much Western culture owes to the glories of medieval Arab civilization, and reveals the untold story of how Europe drank from the well of Muslim learning.

A remarkable history, except for the slavery, genocide, endless wars, abuses of women and children, terrorism, etc. Other than that, a very proud people.

Well, unfortunately for the xenophobes the history is more or less true. Doesn’t mean one has to love Osama bin Laden or his ilk.

Islam destroyed their once thriving culture. Read Niall Ferguson the West and the Rest.

@AndyBook
I suppose you could read Ferguson. Or you could read someone who isn’t a rampant egotist and corporate shill for the Bush family.

This is an excellent book. Time to re-read, I suppose.

The Arabs have undoubtedly left a few traits behind during their 1000 year attack on the West but “Transformed”?
Everything in the Middle East from electricity and roads to books and medicine is Jewish or… western except for the religion and the morals.

Note how the book is about Arabs, Persians and Turks, not Islamists. Ever since Islam took over, there have been ZERO scientific advancement in the ME

God, who punishes the oppressors, saw the rapes of the Romans, who brutally plundered our churches and monasteries wherever they ruled, and cruelly persecuted us, and sent the sons of Ismail (Arabs) from the south to save us.
Cardinal Monsenyƶr Duchene quotes Syriac Michael’s speech (Jacobite Syrian Christian Church) upon what fell upon them when they refused unification with Eastern Roman Emperor Heraclius.
Philosophy takes its source entirely from Islam. Bacon
Freedom of speech borrowed from Islam was taking root more and more in Latin nations. Engels Dialectical Materialism
The conquest of Islam was a favor for Spain. Because this conquest brought about an important social revolution; It has eliminated most of the troubles that have plagued the country for centuries. The Muslims ruled according to the following method: the taxes were completely lowered compared to those of the old administrations. They took huge knightly lands cultivated by slave farmers or dissatisfied slaves from the wealthy and divided them equally among those who cultivated them. The new owners worked with great zeal and produced a very good crop. Trade was freed from crushing restrictions and heavy taxes and flourished. This gave rise to a new energy. All these measures provided a general relief that led to the favorable acceptance of Muslim rule from the very beginning.
Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy (1820-1883)
The Islamic conquests provided a real boost to the world economy. Jacques Pirenne
In the west, only after the crusades, Muslims were imitated and taxes were imposed on individuals and incomes. King Louis V of France 1146-1165. It took place in England during the reign of King Henry II in 1166.

The making of humanity(Book by. Robert Briffault):
” it was under their successors at that Oxford school that Roger Bacon learned Arabic
and Arabic science. Neither Roger Bacon nor his later ”
- Page 200
” namesake has any title to be credited with having introduced the experimental method. Roger Bacon was no more than one of the apostles of Muslim science and
method to Christian Europe ; and he never wearied of
declaring that a knowledge of Arabic and Arabian science was for his contemporaries the only way to true knowledge. ”

” and those arose directly and solely as a result of Arabian civilization. Down to the fifteenth century whatever scientific activity existed in Europe was engaged in assimilating Arab learning without greatly adding to it ”

* The history of science and the new humanism(Book by. George Sarton):
” perhaps the main, as well as the least obvious, achievement of the Middle Ages, was the creation of the experimental spirit, or more exactly its slow incubation. This was primarily due to Muslims down to the end of the twelfth century ”

* New Researches Into the Composition and Exegesis of the Qoran(Book by. Hartwig Hirschfeld):
” We must not be surprised to find the Qoran regarded as the fountain-head of all the sciences ”

* Who is the first scientist in the world?
- In fact, many experts recognize Ibn al-Haytham, who lived in present-day Iraq between 965 and 1039 A.D., as the first scientist. He invented the pinhole camera, discovered the laws of refraction and studied a number of natural phenomena, such as rainbows and eclipses.

koran is Science? AHAAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
I’ve read it - the only science in it is the science of plagiarism, myopia, degeneracy, retardery & vicious prejudice toward ‘kuffar’ & women
all science was transmitted already through latin, that from arabic was minimal & mostly from India such as algebra & numerals
in fact all ‘Arab’ science & philosophy was based on a few individuals who weren’t even particularly religious - and based on the cultures the retarded degenerates invaded (much like the mongols)
all advancements in this book attributed to ‘muslims’ I guarantee are DESPITE not because of the cult of Mohammad
and more than anything, like jews (from who Mohammad stole his cult) they fuck kids. And mutilate their genitals. Any “culture” that rapes little girls & chops kids dicks off isn’t deserving of anything but discrimination - until they don’t do it anymore.
they are illigitemate & barbaric - yet those who point these glaring facts out are somehow ‘bigoted’
well if its bigoted to protect children from rape & genital mutilation, I’m the biggest bigot of them all.
