**Science Fictions: How Fraud, Bias, Negligence, and Hype Undermine the Search for Truth**
An insider’s view of science reveals why many scientific results cannot always be relied upon - and how the system can be reformed.
Science is how we understand the world. Yet failures in peer review and mistakes in statistics have rendered a shocking number of scientific studies useless - or, worse, badly misleading. Such errors have distorted our knowledge in fields as wide-ranging as medicine, physics, nutrition, education, genetics, economics, and the search for extraterrestrial life. As Science Fictions makes clear, the current system of research funding and publication not only fails to safeguard us from blunders but actively encourages bad science - with sometimes deadly consequences.

Interested to listen, especially since in 2021 “follow the science” has become a code-phrase for “don’t think for yourself, just do as your told.”

It is probably worth pointing out that this book is not an anti-science, pseudo-science, or in favour of getting your understanding of the world from Facebook posts. It reminds me of Ben Goldacre’s works, passionately pro-science, as our best tool for understanding our world, but pointing out imperfections, and areas where it falls short of its full potential.

One of the greatest things about the last few years is that the people instructing you to believe and not question science are not, themselves, scientists of any stripe.
Yes, we’re being told by people with law degrees, pol-sci degrees, and the infamous gender studies degrees to “believe” things that they can’t understand.
These people read humanities subjects because they are scientifically incapable. No secrets.
So, while this book is nice, it’s a bit like piddling into the void, a waste of time. The people who need to understand this are running around telling us “there’s too much reliance on facts” and “people need to stop questioning authority.”
So, thanks OP the book is much appreciated. But sadly, it’s never going to make a difference. “The ScienceTM” is a collection of religious fools who think that science is a democracy where if you can insist that 97% think something, that somehow makes it true.

There’s a massive difference between the ’science’ trumpanzees follow (studies have shown that x = z, limited study with no control group, funded by the Y organization), and peer reviewed work which has been backed up and supported by nearly every expert in their field.
If you’re spouting tripe about climate change being a hoax or vaccinations being a conspiracy, you definitely aren’t qualified to speak on this topic.

Jack Milad, of course there is climate change. It’s called weather and the seasons…
October 9th, 2021
Climate and weather are not the same thing.
Weather is local and temporary.
Seasons are dependent on the axis tilt and the orbit of the Earth around the sun.
Jesus Christ. This is basic science.

Oh, and “follow the science” is not code for “don’t think for yourself”, it means that random ill informed opinions don’t have the same value as methodical research by experts who’ve spent their lifetimes studying the topic.

A timely read.
THANKS for sharing!

Best science book of 2021, as far as I am concerned.
