Publisher’s summary
A contrarian scientist wrestles with the big questions that modern physics raises, and what physics says about the human condition.
Not only can we not currently explain the origin of the universe, it is questionable we will ever be able to explain it. The notion that there are universes within particles, or that particles are conscious, is ascientific, as is the hypothesis that our universe is a computer simulation. On the other hand, the idea that the universe itself is conscious is difficult to rule out entirely.
According to Sabine Hossenfelder, it is not a coincidence that quantum entanglement and vacuum energy have become the go-to explanations of alternative healers, or that people believe their deceased grandmother is still alive because of quantum mechanics. Science and religion have the same roots, and they still tackle some of the same questions: Where do we come from? Where do we go to? How much can we know? The area of science that is closest to answering these questions is physics. Over the last century, physicists have learned a lot about which spiritual ideas are still compatible with the laws of nature. Not always, though, have they stayed on the scientific side of the debate.
In this lively, thought-provoking book, Hossenfelder takes on the biggest questions in physics: Does the past still exist? Do particles think? Was the universe made for us? Has physics ruled out free will? Will we ever have a theory of everything? She lays out how far physicists are on the way to answering these questions, where the current limits are, and what questions might well remain unanswerable forever. Her book offers a no-nonsense yet entertaining take on some of the toughest riddles in existence, and will give the listener a solid grasp on what we know—and what we don’t know.

Looks interesting, thanks!

Teleology has always intrigued me: at least in the sense that: if the Universe have a purpose, Whose purpose would that be?
Hossenfelder is one of the few contemporary thinkers still dealing in teleology (putting aside the hucksters, liars, and half-wits, of whom there are as many as ever) and I always find her lines of argument engaging, if finally insubstantial.
It will be good to hear her speculations at length.

Sabine, like a majority of people, called people like me a “Doomer”. Although Sabine has yet to accept the entirety of climate consequences, she has balls that many men lack. It’s much harder for super smart people to admit they are wrong, but those who are intellectually honest, often do. Sabine has kids, so that too makes it hard to come to terms with the unstoppable enormity of what we have done and what is to come. Climate change is an existential threat, but it is but one predicament of human Overshoot. We have destroyed so much habitat it’s radically altered the life sustaining biosphere and triggered a mass extinction - the 8th, not 6th. We have impoverished the biosphere so greatly that within a lifetime it will no longer be able to support most human life.
`
So below is one of Sabine’s most recent youtube videos.

There’s still loads of American white boy conservatives, who are pretending to be
climate Duh-niers because they don’t know how to admit they were wrong for so long and they fear the potential loss of tribal status & possible getting the boot. These are legit concerns.

LOL! And you are…? Your deep insight is posted here, for the world to see. Sabine supposedly wrote this “garbage” book, but you can’t construct a proper sentence. Pitiful product of your generation, son.

lol, el_lissitzky. Name one thing String Theory/M-Theory has proved. You can’t because it hasn’t and never will. There is a long list of things it _wants_ to prove. But none of them will ever come true because you can’t start with math and look for something for it to apply it to and expect that ham-fisted approach to yield results. You have to start with actual physical phenomena, then work backwards to figure out which math to research.
