A leading cognitive scientist argues that a deep sense of good and evil is bred in the bone.
From John Locke to Sigmund Freud, philosophers and psychologists have long believed that we begin life as blank moral slates. Many of us take for granted that babies are born selfish and that it is the role of society - and especially parents - to transform them from little sociopaths into civilized beings. In Just Babies, Paul Bloom argues that humans are in fact hardwired with a sense of morality. Drawing on groundbreaking research at Yale, Bloom demonstrates that, even before they can speak or walk, babies judge the goodness and badness of others¿ actions; feel empathy and compassion; act to soothe those in distress; and have a rudimentary sense of justice.
Paul Bloom has a gift for bringing abstract ideas to life, moving seamlessly from Darwin, Herodotus, and Adam Smith to The Princess Bride, Hannibal Lecter, and Louis C.K. Vivid, witty, and intellectually probing, Just Babies offers a radical new perspective on our moral lives.

Thanks for the up ssitimefill, and the seeds.
Should lead to an interesting conversation between me and my girlfriend, who grew up a christian, taught/believing we’re born evil, me being an atheist understanding a fair amount of psychology, telling her no just no.

I started listening to this, so far it is really good! Several good books deal with the evolution of morality but this one focuses on a developmental psychology perspective.

could you possibly have something else by this author?

I doubt the premise. Children above all else can be very cruel, nowhere is mobbing, ostracization and lying as prevalent as among them. I myself have many memories of being mobbed as a child beyond all reasonable standards, just to then turn around and laugh at a cripple who was shorter than us due to developmental issues. Evolutionarily speaking, it also makes sense that children would be very egotistical, and ostracizing. Extreme egotism coupled with baby schema ensures that all your needs are met when you can’t do it yourself. Basis for being a moral person it is not. It should also be noted that when you advocate for this kind of determinism, you are in no position to criticize people that do the same with IQ, for instance, and that then the notion that all races, despite having been apart for 50k years, would develop the exact same moral code naturally is not something you’ll be able to rationally defend.
