Publisher’s Summary
“I can imagine few more enjoyable ways of thinking than to read this book.”
—Sarah Bakewell, New York Times Book Review, front-page review
Tackling the “darkest question in all of philosophy” with “raffish erudition” (Dwight Garner, The New York Times), author Jim Holt explores the greatest metaphysical mystery of all: why is there something rather than nothing? This runaway best seller, which has captured the imagination of critics and the public alike, traces our latest efforts to grasp the origins of the universe. Holt adopts the role of cosmological detective, traveling the globe to interview a host of celebrated scientists, philosophers, and writers, “testing the contentions of one against the theories of the other” (Jeremy Bernstein, Wall Street Journal). As he interrogates his list of ontological culprits, the brilliant yet slyly humorous Holt contends that we might have been too narrow in limiting our suspects to God versus the Big Bang. This “deft and consuming” (David Ulin, Los Angeles Times) narrative humanizes the profound questions of meaning and existence it confronts.

The best answer I’ve heard is…
People would complain even if it didn’t exist!

It would occasion great popular contention, right enough…

These books are invariably like how in college there is a class that sounds irresistible. Always turns out absolutely tedious. Weeks of the most basic busy work before going on to conclude with the most obvious concluclusions.

It was created by an evil god to torture us.

Evil does not create; evil distorts, tortures, perverts, & destroys what is already in existence.

Evil is a concept, caesar963. It doesn’t exist out in the world, floating around in the air with other human concepts like justice or harmony. Without people to claim what is or isn’t evil, it would not exist.
And since the user mybutthole was taking the piss, I will add to that with a joke:
An old Jew dies and goes to Heaven.
He asks if God wants to hear a holocaust joke.
God agrees and the man tells the joke.
God says, “That is not funny.”
The Jew pauses and replies “I guess you had to be there.”

Still the same - evil is a certain quality, both abstract & concrete in operation.
“Without peop to claim what is or isn’t evil, would not exist” - Would mathematical principles, the laws of the universe & logic exist without people? If individuals such as you or I did not exist, would murder still be objectively wrong? Is the Holocaust/genocide objectively evil in all circumstances? Or merely socially awkward? We’re back to abstract, metaphysical qualities again, you see.
Unless a person’s contention is that everything is “relative,” and that there are no objective truths/values.
