“Climate change is a hoax - and so is coronavirus.”
“Vaccines are bad for you.”
These days, many of our fellow citizens reject scientific expertise and prefer ideology to facts. They are not merely uninformed - they are misinformed. They cite cherry-picked evidence, rely on fake experts, and believe conspiracy theories.
How can we get them to change their minds and accept the facts when they don’t believe in facts?
In this book, Lee McIntyre shows that anyone can fight back against science deniers, and argues that it’s important to do so. Science denial can kill. Drawing on his own experience - including a visit to a Flat Earth convention - as well as academic research, McIntyre outlines the common themes of science denialism, present in misinformation campaigns ranging from tobacco companies’ denial in the 1950s that smoking causes lung cancer to today’s anti-vaxxers.
He describes attempts to use his persuasive powers as a philosopher to convert Flat Earthers; surprising discussions with coal miners; and conversations with a scientist friend about genetically modified organisms in food. McIntyre offers tools and techniques for communicating the truth and values of science, emphasizing that the most important way to reach science deniers is to talk to them calmly and respectfully - to put ourselves out there, and meet them face to face.

I am usually conflicted about the ethics of ‘converting’ a science denier. On the one hand, I doubt you can reason anyone out of a conviction that reason never led them into; on the other hand, do we need more dumb in the world.
But David McRaney’s How Minds Change (which I first met on this site) is one of the most fascinating works of popular psychology I’ve read recently, and that also spends a lot of its time considering science deniers and people of faith.
So I’ll give this a try: though I suspect some folk need a drug stronger, and more easily available, than the truth.

Flat Earth videos are being deliberately promoted on YouTube in order to tarnish any political view that is controversial yet serious (as in: properly researched and citing academic sources) with the same brush of ridiculousness.
It is the serious theories they ban, not the obviously silly ones. The debunkers actually need the silly ones for their routine of reductio ad absurdum. So you can’t mention vaccine related harm without lumping it in with Flat Earth or QAnon in the same sentence. (Before that it was Lizard People and before the Lizard People it was Elvis Living on the Moon.) Because if you only mentioned vaccine harm, there would be a risk of being lured into a sincere and rational debate. And our current culture of conformity dictates that You. Must. Avoid. Engaging. In. Debate. About. Serious. Political. Topics. At. All. Cost.

There comes a time when the cognitive dissonance becomes to large to handle: the widening gap between the ritualistic retreat into ridicule, ad hominems, straw man arguments and smear on the one hand and, on the other, the self-image of the White Knight defending Science, that would imply engaging with rational debate with your opponents.

“if u only mentioned vaccine harm, there’d be a risk of being lured into a sincere/rational debate” - In fairness, the risk of that is exceedingly low. And there seems to be a remarkable crossover between these loony, bizarre con theories; whether it be Flat Earth, QAnon or pryderi’s genocide denial. It’s often the same nutters spinning the isolated, vulnerable absurdities.

@Thamus “So you can’t mention vaccine related harm without lumping it in with Flat Earth or QAnon in the same sentence.”
Yes, because they all have the same amount of truth, and the same fanatical belief in absurdity. And a large overlap in adherents, I suspect virtually all Qanon are antivaxxers.

Who would want to talk with a science denier? That makes as much sense as inviting a zealot into your hour to proselytize or calling telemarketers if you miss their call.
November 2nd, 2023
@Gweilo thanks for giving me a good chuckle. and yet someone could believe in all these ‘denial’ topics, and yet not end up dead, disabled or with myocarditis, pericarditis or an adverse event, like virtually everyone i talked to who had the jab. The cruel irony is that you are not a shill you just love your death cult so much you will delete my 10 point annihilation of your cult logic, that only benefit CV cult members like yourself. Are the government Vax adverse events data (VAERS) in the TENS of thousands of deaths also science-deniers? ( Harvard study 99% under-reported) And P.S To the climatards, if you deny the sun controls the climate and the temperature over recorded history, you are mentally addled to put it mildly, so who is the denier there. Its people like you that make me want to endorse monthly boosters.

What’s the world coming to when the dumb call others deniers and can write and sell books about these awful ppl that think for themselves.
Regarding gene therapy deaths and injuries, one would have to discount well published and highly accredited medics who still follow the scientific methodology and who have woken up to the fraud that has been perpetrated against humanity and who looking at the data have reached the conclusion that there was zero real benefit and 1 in 800 times risk of death or a serious adverse reaction! Sure, what do these deniers know, right? Smacks forehead.

Hey privateero,
the solar model you are referring to has been debunked many times over. Also in Germany for they injected 192million units of covid vaccination. Measured by the number of doses of
COVID-19 vaccines and the number of suspected cases reported in which symptoms relating to the
the above-mentioned symptom complex were reported, this results in a reporting rate of less than one
suspected case per 100,000 vaccinations (0.76:100,000 vaccinations). https://www.pei.de/DE/newsroom/dossier/coronavirus/sicherheitsbericht-covid-19-impfstoffe-aktuell.html
