An atmospheric scientist explains why global climate change mitigation and energy decarbonization demand American diplomacy, technology, and policy
Professor of environmental engineering Daniel Cohan argues that escaping the gravest perils of climate change will first require American diplomacy, technological innovation, and policy to catalyze decarbonization globally. Combining his own expertise along with insights from more than a hundred interviews with diplomats, scholars, and clean-technology pioneers, Cohan identifies flaws in previous efforts to combat climate change. He highlights opportunities for more successful strategies, including international “climate clubs” and accelerated development of clean energy technologies. Grounded in history and emerging scholarship, this book offers a forward-looking vision of solutions to confronting climate gridlock and a clear-eyed recognition of the challenges to enacting them.
“Daniel Cohan makes a compelling case that the problem of climate change is solvable. Fixing the gridlock on global action requires fixing the gridlock here in the United States of America. Cohan shows how that can be done.”—David Victor, UC San Diego

“require American diplomacy, technological innovation, and policy to catalyze decarbonization globally.”
The world has given up on expecting the US do do anything except obstruct, as its entire political class is beholden to the fossil fuel industry.

Granted the US is still very innovative, but “American diplomacy” probably assumes a preeminent role in leadership rather than a global cooperative diplomacy.
Because that first ship has sailed …

Never gonna happen. I like to use this quote from a excellent article describing 30 years of COP out conferences. The numbers tell the tale.

Expert IPCC Reviewer Speaks Out’
“We’ve seen this act (COP) repeat over and over, ever since COP1 in Berlin in 1995, as each successive COP-ending-ceremony finds the Parties congratulating each other, slaps on the back, for one more successful climate conference of 20,000-30,000 able-bodied professionals wiped-out from overconsumption of Beluga caviar and Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, but subsequently carbon emissions increase the following year, and every following year thereafter. What’s to congratulate?
More to the point, the annualized CO2 emissions rate is +60% since COP1, not decreasing, not going down, not once. After 25 years of the same identical pattern, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the take-home-work from all 25 COPs mysteriously turns into the antithesis of the mission statement of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”

I’ve followed closely since 1988 and the bottom line is all the numbers show humans have gone backwards while telling themselves lies. It will never happen. Not with the current technology. We are in runaway climate change NOW and the disaster record books are being smashed and rewritten every year. There are so many positive self reinforcing feedbacks UNDERWAY THAT THE BEST THE HUMANS COULD DO, TECHNICALLY, IS SLOW THINGS DOWN A LITTLE AND THAT WOULD REQUIRE THE HUMANS TO CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOR SO RADICALLY THAT THEY WOULD BECOME A DIFFERENT SPICES. [Sorry caps unintentiona].
If we are to act like rational adults then crap like this is trashed. The future is going to be grim then it’ll turn into a horror show. The killer will be the ever increasing damage to industrial agriculture - the food. Look at the US drought monitor & many articles discussing it. As far as I’m concerned, false hope is the cruelest cut of all and most times it’s these author trying to twist numbers to sooth his existential climate fears & make a buck. The funny part is all these techno hopium pushers are bigger liars than all the journeyman climate deniers ever were. Here’s a link to American Physicist/realist Tom Murphy. Spend some time reading his articles. He’s no sandwich board wearing “The End Is Neigh” nutter. He is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable and humble too. — https://dothemath.ucsd.edu/

Everybody’s acting like the west can do ANYTHING. We can’t. China and India’s pollution output is so great, nothing aside from wiping them off the map can improve the worldwide pollution. They pollute HUNDREDS of times harder than the west and other countries. All this “climate solution” crap is just hogwash if it doesn’t address the 2 elephants in the room, and only tries to guilt-trip America.
