We live in an era of tribalism, polarization, and intense social division - separating people along lines of religion, political conviction, race, ethnicity, and sometimes gender. How did this happen? In Conformity, Cass R. Sunstein argues that the key to making sense of living in this fractured world lies in understanding the idea of conformity - what it is and how it works - as well as the countervailing force of dissent.
Lacking information of our own and seeking the good opinion of others, we often follow the crowd, but Sunstein shows that when individuals suppress their own instincts about what is true and what is right, it can lead to significant social harm. While dissenters tend to be seen as selfish individualists, dissent is actually an important means of correcting the natural human tendency toward conformity and has enormous social benefits in reducing extremism, encouraging critical thinking, and protecting freedom itself.
Sunstein concludes that while much of the time it is in the individual’s interest to follow the crowd, it is in the social interest for individuals to say and do what they think is best. A well-functioning democracy depends on it.

So cool, notonthat. It’s scary how conformist society has become. It’s like people are terrified to be caught in flagrante delicto, thinking independently. To alter their programming without consultation. Viva dissent!

BRIAN: Look. You’ve got it all wrong. You don’t need to follow me. You don’t need to follow anybody! You’ve got to think for yourselves. You’re all individuals!
FOLLOWERS: Yes, we’re all individuals!
BRIAN: You’re all different!
FOLLOWERS: Yes, we are all different!
DENNIS: I’m not.

The one difference between the West and the East was the West was built on individualism and the East on societalism (face culture).
Social media has turned the West into an extreme face culture and one with no experience in managing behavior in such a climate.
Switching off social media is your only real defense against assimilation by the hive mind. Research at Stanford University showed that nobody benefits from being on social media - not even the “high friend volume” users that Facebook asserted would benefit from it. Yet, people still keep arguing that it’s somehow essential…
In essence, social media is tobacco right before they proved it caused lung cancer. It’s already known to be addictive and even big tobacco didn’t have the balls to boast about designing for addiction which is what Silicon Valley has done for social media.
Get out while you still can.

@GordonCoon: Your astute observation makes me very thankful that I pulled the plug on FB a few years ago. I remember the moment then the thought hit me that I was curating the presentation of who I was and slit the thin-spun cord.
Having grown up in the West but spent much time in the East, your comments about societalism are spot on. Add into that the Eastern shame-based frame versus the Western guilt-based frame, and you can really eff yourself up pretty good these days.

Groupthink lefty liberals could benefit from this.

Professor Sunstein is such a brilliant and prolific author. I really enjoyed Nudge and look forward to this thought-provoking thesis.

@ssafe05: Thanks for the “Brian” reference. Gave me a big grin!
Sadly, society(ies) are all becoming the mindless hordes that socialism wants and needs.
Think I’d better stop here…
P.S. I have read parts in an epub - can’t wait to get the whole thing in audio!!
Thanks to all.

Democrats are all good free-thinkers. Republicans are all evil conformists listening to Fox News.
From the a person who loved going around quoting Mao.
Yawn.
